City of the Great Machine ist ein Kennerspiel. In einem düsteren viktorianischen Steampunk-Universum kämpfen Spieler als die Große Maschine oder als Heldenallianz um die Kontrolle einer mobilen Stadt im Himmel. Das Spiel besticht durch strategische Tiefe, unterschiedliche Spielmodi und komplexe Mechanismen wie Area Control und Ressourcenmanagement.

City of the Great Machine is a strategy game set in a dark, technocratic Victorian steampunk world. The game revolves around the conflict between the Great Machine—an artificial intelligence network—and a group of Heroes united to resist it. The Great Machine can be controlled by a player or run automatically, which significantly alters how the game unfolds. The Great Machine rules over a City built on mobile platforms in the sky, commanding an army of perfected Servants and mechanical Guards. Its ultimate goal is to suppress social unrest and complete a Master Plan aimed at perfecting humanity. Opposing the Great Machine are the Heroes, who work together to ignite a revolution. They spread discontent throughout the City, recruit famous citizens to their cause, and spark riots. Their mission is to thwart the Master Plan, which would enslave humanity. City of the Great Machine supports both One-vs-Many play (2-4 players) and cooperative or solo modes (1-3 players). A modular board offers endless City layouts, which can be reshaped during the game. Heroes move secretly each round by choosing their target Districts in secret. Resource management plays a key role: Heroes spend Trust, while the Great Machine uses Bonds for actions and movements alike. The gameplay is asymmetric, with distinct victory conditions—Heroes aim to trigger three riots, while the Great Machine seeks to complete the Master Plan. Players must maintain secrecy, as the Heroes hide their plans from the Great Machine but may discuss strategies only when it is present.
