Commands & Colors Samurai Battles (engl.)

Beschreibung

Commands & Colors: Samurai Battles lets players reenact key battles from Japanese history, capturing the unique tactics, terrain, and forces of the samurai era. The included scenarios are designed around historically accurate deployments and terrain features, with a flexible scale that varies by battle — in some scenarios a unit represents an entire clan, while in others only a handful of warriors.

The game uses Command cards to simulate the "fog of war," presenting strategic challenges and opportunities for players. Combat is resolved swiftly with battle dice, while the Honor & Fortune mechanic requires players to balance between these elements tactically. Dragon Cards introduce suspense and surprise, adding moments that can suddenly alter the course of battle. Overall, gameplay faithfully reflects the strengths and limitations of different Japanese unit types, their weapons, and battlefield conditions.

GMT’s edition of Commands & Colors: Samurai Battles significantly expands upon the original Zvezda game. It features more scenarios—around 40 planned in total—along with a greater variety and number of units. Instead of fragile assembled plastic figures, players now use durable, stickered blocks that are easier to handle, store, and deploy.

The battlefield is presented on a single mounted map board (11 hexes deep by 12 hexes wide) filled with diverse terrain tiles, including new features such as fences, ramparts, and castle walls. The scenarios have been revised to restore historically accurate unit deployments that originally had to be reduced in the older edition. This means more units and richer tactical possibilities.

Whether you are new to the Commands & Colors system or have played earlier versions, GMT’s Samurai Battles offers a robust and engaging experience steeped in the fascinating history of Japan’s samurai era. With its refined components, expanded content, and thoughtful design, it provides both longtime fans and newcomers plenty to explore and enjoy.
