Description

Following the fighting around Turda in September 1944, Malinovsky receives orders from Stavka to advance toward Budapest. To carry out this mission, he gathers a formidable force, although somewhat depleted by earlier combat: Pliev and Gorshkov’s mobile groups, the 6th Armoured Guards Army, and the 53rd Army with a tank corps. Opposing them is the Third Panzer Korps, consisting of three armoured divisions and a Panzer Grenadier division, supported by Hungarian and German troops. Over the course of three weeks and along a front nearly 140 km wide, more than 1,000 tanks will face off. On 6 October 1944, the southern pincer of the 2nd Ukrainian Front attacks Army Group South’s forces around Arad, breaking the 3rd Hungarian Army. Within 24 hours, the spearhead—the Cavalry Mechanized Group under Pliev—advances more than 50 km. Meanwhile, the northern pincer, the 6th Armoured Guards Army, launches a full-force assault on counterattacks by the 1st and 23rd Panzer divisions around Nagyvarad but fails to break through to the Hungarian plain. Malinovsky then redirects Pliev’s group northeast, aiming for a pincer attack on Nagyvarad’s defenders to open the road to Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, and Tokaj, cutting Army Group South in two and isolating the 8th Army, which is retreating before the 4th Ukrainian Front. On 9 October, the southwestern defenses of Debrecen collapse, but German reinforcements respond with two divisions—a Panzer and a Panzer Grenadier division—supported by a Tiger II battalion. This counterattack, Operation Zigeuner Baron, targets the flank of the Soviet penetration on 19 October. Debrecen finally falls on 20 October, and Nyíregyháza follows on the 22nd, effectively isolating the 8th Army. But the battle is not over: exploiting Pliev’s advanced cavalry corps position, the Germans launch a counterassault with forces from the 8th Army and Panzer units, attempting to break the Soviet encirclement and destroy the mobile group. As the Soviets, can you effectively deploy your powerful armoured forces to encircle the enemy? And as a member of the Axis, can you rescue the 8th Army and defend the outskirts of Budapest? Game scale: One game turn represents two days of real time. Each hex covers approximately 5 km. Units represent divisions, brigades, regiments, Kampfgruppen, battalions, or headquarters, along with their organic elements.
