Shikoku is a card selection and map-building game set in feudal Japan and forms part of the Nippon series, following Honshu and Hokkaido, and released alongside Kyushu. The game invites players to explore the island of Shikoku during autumn, when the landscape is adorned with vibrant red and gold foliage, creating a serene atmosphere filled with the scents of harvest and woodsmoke. Gameplay in the Nippon series unfolds in two main phases. First, players select a card they will later add to their personal map in the second phase. Each game in the series offers a unique card selection mechanism, which can be mixed and matched across titles. The map cards, scoring options, and optional scoring cards differ between games, providing varied strategic challenges. In Shikoku’s selection phase, a pool of six cards is prepared at the start. Players take turns picking a map card from this pool by placing another card from the deck at one end of the selection area. Since the pool can never be split, choosing a card from the middle may require spending a resource from your map. Shikoku introduces new terrain types—temples and roads. Temples have distinct scoring rules and, together with roads, form a transport system for resources that players use to score at their factories during the endgame. An optional rule adds Resource Challenge scoring cards, which grant bonus points if players achieve specific production goals by adding required colored production squares to their maps throughout the game.
