1883 is a train game set in Northern Italy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, belonging to the 18xx family. Designed by Manlio Manzini, co-designer of 1841, it introduces several unique mechanics that enrich the classic 18xx experience. Players invest in corporations that grow through buying shares or issuing new shares to the Bank Pool at nearly market price. The game features random events that can be influenced by purchasing political support, adding an element of strategic risk management. Government concessions reward players and corporations for establishing specific connections, while a bus company operates its own network and allows players to invest by buying shares. A cooperative corporation rotates management among players, creating opportunities for collaboration—and competition, since players can also steal from it. Two corporations may merge if their presidents agree, creating new strategic possibilities. Gravity trains are a cost-effective option, running on tracks already in use without counting against a company’s train limit; however, their reliability is uncertain, determined by a dice roll that can result in breakdowns or total loss. Finally, share prices move on the market only when a dividend payout meets or exceeds the corporation’s current share price, making careful financial planning essential to market success.
