1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties is an '18xx' railroad game inspired by Francis Tresham’s classic 1829, featuring familiar mechanics alongside unique twists. Among its distinctive elements are randomly selected companies, three types of trains, and two different financing methods—either petitioning Parliament or piecemeal capitalization during stock rounds. Players can operate multiple trains on the same track, and the game accommodates 1 to 8 players. It also pays special tribute to the renowned “Railway King” George Hudson.

While the initial setup involves some randomness, the gameplay itself is entirely skill-based, relying on strategic judgment and player interaction without any luck factors.

Although the mechanics are intuitive and the gameplay progresses swiftly, 1862 is considered complex due to the challenging decisions required throughout. Compared to other 18xx titles, it offers a relatively shorter playtime, with experienced players typically completing a game in about four hours or less.

The GMT version maintains the original gameplay intact while enhancing components: the map is mounted on a sturdy board, stock certificates and train cards are half-sized, and station tokens and track tiles are printed on high-quality counter stock, similar to GMT’s previous 18xx release, 1846.
