Banish the Snakes is a solitaire or cooperative game set in 5th century Ireland during the collapse of the Roman Empire in the west and the rise of Christianity on the island. Players take on the roles of Saints—Patrick and others (up to six players)—working together to convert the pagan population before invading barbarians overwhelm Britain, which would endanger the future of civilization. The game features a map of Ireland divided into four provinces, reflecting the historical layout without counties. Wooden tiles represent the people, Druids, Chiefs, Kings, and the High King at Tara. Players must navigate the complex relationships between these groups to spread their new religious ideas. Each turn, a card is drawn that presents new challenges linked to historical events, figures, and ideas from the era, such as the arrival of saints like Neil of the Nine Hostages. The difficulty of these events changes based on the previous cards played, ensuring that every game offers a unique experience. A diagram of Great Britain tracks the decline of Roman civilization as barbarian forces conquer successive regions. As Britain falls, more difficult challenges are added to the deck, until the island is cut off, ending the game. Success means the flourishing of Christianity in Ireland, leading to a golden age of arts, literature, and history on the Emerald Isle. Irish missionaries will then carry these cultural achievements back to Great Britain and mainland Europe, helping to preserve civilization. Failure, however, threatens this legacy.
