Set in June 1941, the German offensive pushes deep into Soviet territory, delivering heavy losses and numerous encirclements. While the German advance seems unstoppable to Hitler and many others, frontline officers and soldiers begin to question the accuracy of pre-war intelligence. They were unprepared for the fierce resistance posed by hundreds of KV-1 and T-34 tanks—machines far superior to their own equipment.

For now, German tactics allow them to overcome superior Russian hardware, but the Soviet defenders quickly adapt. Despite staggering casualties that would have seemed to decimate any other force, the Red Army continues to fight with relentless determination. As the German forces press eastward, more soldiers wonder what challenges lie ahead in this protracted and brutal campaign.
