Big Sur (engl.)

Description

Big Sur is a strategy game for 2 to 4 players aged 10+. Build scenic highways by drafting and playing cards featuring varied terrains. Manage resources using dual-faced cards to create connected routes that score points. Flexible engine-building and tableau gameplay offers strategic depth with bonus actions and Landmark cards for varied scoring.

Big Sur is a compact engine-building and tableau game that feels simple at first but offers surprisingly deep decision-making. On your turn, you choose two cards either from the shared market or the deck, then play cards into your tableau. There’s also a small bonus action that adds extra strategic flair. Each card represents a highway section featuring specific terrain types, such as forested mountains or floral landscapes. You build your highways by discarding cards that match the required costs. The length of each highway segment is marked on the card, and at the end of the game, you score points for connected cards of the same terrain, earning one point per mile. The game’s economy revolves around the dual faces of the cards. You can discard cards from your hand to pay for new ones by using the unique symbols shown on both sides. Additionally, some smaller one-mile cards grant resources when played, contributing to your engine. Cards discarded to your personal discard pile also temporarily count as resources. There are three types of mile cards:

• One-mile cards that provide resources
• Longer mile cards (three miles or more) that score many points when chained together
• Two-mile cards that offer opportunities for bonus points or clever abilities

The two-mile cards, often the most strategically valuable, allow you to build combos or score in special ways. Big Sur’s gameplay is fast and flexible. You can draft several cards at once and play them in one go, even if it sacrifices ideal combos, or take it slow and steady, playing cards each turn to optimize your route. The pace and style are completely up to you. This description is based on a pre-production copy, so artwork, components, and rules may be subject to change. Included is a cool first-player marker modeled after the California Hwy One sign, plus Landmark cards that introduce varied scoring opportunities and bonus powers. Although recommended for advanced players, these Landmark cards add enjoyable variety without complicating the game. Overall, Big Sur captures the spirit of a scenic highway drive in a compact, engaging puzzle that’s perfect for quick, thoughtful plays.
