Charioteer (engl.)

Description

The ground shakes with thousands of pounding hoofbeats as wheels creak and reins tighten under frantic pressure. You are a charioteer racing through the Circus Maximus, the most famous raceway of the ancient world. The noise swells with each lap — chariots clash, whips crack, and the crowd roars with every surprising lead or mishap. From the imperial box, the emperor laughs and shouts, while clouds of dust blur the vibrant banners of the four factions. As you approach the final bend, three hundred thousand spectators rise to their feet. You hold a narrow lead, with just one rival pushing for a last desperate sprint. While many fans are crestfallen, others erupt in cheers, the noise rising to a thunderous crescendo as you surge toward the finish line — a hundred yards more, and you become a hero. Charioteer, designed by Matt Calkins (author of Sekigahara), is a strategic racing game with straightforward rules and fast-paced play. Each player commands a chariot in ancient Rome’s Circus Maximus, selecting moves simultaneously to outmaneuver opponents. Movement is determined by melding sets from cards in your hand, with each card serving multiple functions. Crafting a move requires matching several cards, and using a card in one set excludes it from another. Deciding when to execute crucial moves is as vital as the moves themselves. Moves come in four colors, each with unique strengths:

• Red moves allow attacks on opponents,
• Yellow helps recover from disruptions,
• Black enables sharp turns,
• Green powers sprints.

Each racer starts with unique abilities and gains improved skills during the race, leading to significant bonuses in favored move types. Impressing the emperor further accelerates a racer’s progress. Players can deploy tokens to boost their moves, earning additional tokens by convincing the crowd with large matching card combinations. Sometimes it pays to delay using your best sets until they qualify for a fan token. Racing encounters range from violent clashes to calmer contests depending on player and emperor behavior. Attacks inflict damage that slows movement, and some players specialize in quick recovery, while others strategically deploy shields when aggression is expected. Victory isn’t always about leading the pack; developing key skills, accumulating tokens, and managing damage are equally important. Whip icons offer trailing racers a chance to make a comeback. Charioteer is easy to learn and accessible to both bright young players and adults, yet it rewards strategic thinking and skillful play.
