Unique house abilities add strategic depth, offering fresh gameplay for both new and experienced Codenames fans.

Codenames: Back to Hogwarts Edition brings the beloved word association game into the magical world of Hogwarts with a competitive house-vs-house twist. Players take on the role of first-year students, divided into two rival houses, each led by a prefect who knows the secrets of the school’s mysterious card grid.

During their turn, prefects give a one-word clue paired with a number, indicating how many cards relate to that clue. Their teammates then try to guess the correct words, revealing cards one by one. Correct guesses allow the team to continue up to the indicated number, but choosing a rival house card, a dead end, a locked door, or encountering groundskeeper Argus Filch ends their turn or the game. Avoiding Filch is crucial, as his appearance immediately hands victory to the opposing house.

Winning rounds earns points for your house, tracked in the House Cup over multiple plays. While the core mechanics will feel familiar to fans of classic Codenames, this edition adds strategic depth through unique asymmetrical abilities available to each house. Each house has two powerful, distinct special abilities, and for every game, only one ability per house is used, offering a variety of gameplay combinations to explore.
