French Wars of Religion - Volume 1 focuses on three pivotal battles of the conflict: Dreux 1562, La Roche l’Abeille 1569, and Coutras 1587. The Battle of Dreux in 1562 marked the first major clash of the French Wars of Religion. It began with an energetic cavalry charge led by Coligny, which threw the Royalist infantry into disarray, with the exception of the Swiss troops. The battle swung back and forth until Guise and Saint-André’s forces, previously inactive, managed to overwhelm the Huguenots. By the end of the day, nearly all commanding officers from both sides were either killed or captured. Despite the Protestant defeat, the war continued for many years. In 1569 at La Roche l’Abeille, following the assassination of Prince of Condé during the third war, Coligny gathered the Protestant forces near the Vienne River. He successfully surprised the Duke of Anjou, who was pursuing him despite holding a strong defensive position. At dawn, Coligny advanced his vanguard through dense hedges and thickets. The Royalist infantry, disrupted by Protestant cavalry attacks, was defeated and its commander, Filippo Strozzi, was taken prisoner. This victory, however, was short-lived. The Battle of Coutras in 1587 opened the eighth and final phase of the French Wars of Religion. Henri of Navarre led the Huguenot forces for the first time as commander-in-chief. Taking advantage of the cover of night, Navarre positioned his troops near Coutras. At ten o’clock, the Royalist gendarmes launched a charge against the Huguenot cavalry’s first line, despite heavy artillery fire under Sully’s command. The tide turned when Navarre, along with Condé and Soissons, led a counter-charge that shattered the morale of Joyeuse’s troops. The resulting defeat was devastating, costing Joyeuse, his brother, and many nobles their lives.
