Tuscany, 1259. As the wealth of crafts and foreign trade elevated northern Italy's urban families above the landed lords, rivalries within and between cities hardened into conflict between two great factions. The Ghibellines aligned with the Hohenstaufen imperial dynasty that nominally ruled Italy, while the Guelphs supported rival imperial claimants and the Pope, the greatest challenger to each Emperor's authority. Whenever one faction gained an advantage, the others joined forces to resist. The city-states of Firenze (Florence) and Siena dominated inland Tuscany as the leaders of these opposing alliances. When the Guelphs secured control of populous Firenze, Ghibelline Siena appealed to Hohenstaufen King Manfredi of Sicily for support. Local rebellions and reprisals intensified, fueled by political exiles stirring unrest. As Manfredi sent German knights to protect his loyal Tuscans, Firenze rallied its people and allies to march on Siena, which responded by assembling a large army of its own. Pisa and Lucca, Lombardia and Orvieto soon joined the conflict. In September 1260, Guelph and Ghibelline forces finally clashed en masse near Montaperti, central Tuscany—the outcome a brutal defeat for Florence. Yet, when Ghibelline exiles returned to claim Firenze, its Guelphs regrouped in Lucca and Arezzo, setting the stage for ongoing strife. Inferno—the third volume in Volko Ruhnke’s Levy & Campaign Series—brings 13th-century Tuscan warfare to life, where factional conflict is driven by the gold florins and thriving populations of emerging cities and prosperous valleys.
