Neanderthal 2nd edition invites you to explore a pivotal era in human evolution, set in Ice Age Europe. Humanity's development accelerated dramatically in the last 30,000-40,000 years, but the reasons behind this remain a mystery—was it genetic mutation or contact between different hominid species? In this game, you take on the role of one of three human species of that time: Archaic, Neanderthal, or Cro-Magnon.

Your tribe’s survival depends on strategic decisions: assigning males to hunt dangerous megafauna while avoiding predators, specializing elders in skills such as fire mastery, inventions, warfare, or animal husbandry, and choosing mating strategies like promiscuity, harems, or pair bonding. Intermarriage increases vocabulary and cognitive abilities, reflecting the complex social evolution of early humans.

This edition enhances the experience with custom meeples for each tribe, updated artwork, and new play aids. The game includes 60 cards, 3 elder boards, 54 meeples plus 3 large meeples, 45 disks representing social, nature, and technical vocabulary, and 10 dice.

Designed by Phil Eklund, known for High Frontier and Pax Porfiriana, with art by Karim Chakroun.
