Purgatorio Men of Iron Vol.VI (engl.)

Beschreibung

Purgatorio Men of Iron Vol.VI (engl.) is a strategy game for 1 to 2 players aged 12+ with a playing time of 60 to 240 minutes. The game covers historic battles between the Guelphs and Ghibellines in medieval Italy, featuring detailed scenarios from the 12th to 14th centuries, including famous conflicts like Legnano and Campaldino. It uses 9/16" counters and offers deep tactical gameplay.

The long-standing conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines shaped much of medieval Italy’s history. Emerging from the broader power struggle between the Holy Roman Emperor and the Pope, this rivalry split Italian city-states and even divided their inhabitants. Supporters of the Papacy were known as Guelphs, while the Ghibellines backed the Holy Roman Empire. Typically, Guelph-aligned cities lay closer to the Empire’s influence, whereas Ghibelline cities were nearer to the Papal States. Purgatorio Men of Iron Vol. VI explores key battles from this era, spanning from the late 12th century through the mid-14th century. Players reenact clashes such as Frederick Barbarossa’s campaigns to regain rebellious provinces, the decline of Hohenstaufen dominance, and the legendary conflict sparked—according to myth—by the theft of a bucket. Included battles are:

• Legnano (29 May 1176) – Frederick Barbarossa confronts the Lombard League for control over northern Italy.
• Cortenuova (27 November 1237) – Frederick II battles the second Lombard League to assert dominance.
• Montaperti (4 September 1260) – A brutal encounter between Florence and Siena, one of Italy’s bloodiest medieval battles.
• Benevento (26 February 1266) – The death of Manfred, King of Sicily, secures Charles I’s claim to the throne.
• Tagliacozzo (23 August 1268) – The capture and execution of Conradin III after defeat by Charles I.
• Campaldino (11 June 1289) – Florence clashes with Arezzo, famously involving the poet Dante Alighieri.
• Zappolino (15 November 1325) – A century-old feud erupts between Modena and Bologna over territorial disputes.

The game uses 9/16" counters and features a map scaled at approximately 110 yards per hex. Units include around 500 infantry, 250 missile troops, and 150 mounted men-at-arms. Typical game duration ranges from one to four hours, offering an immersive experience of these pivotal medieval battles.
