SSO Base Game is a semi-cooperative sci-fi horror survival card and counter game where players strive to outlast a challenge deck filled with narrative threats by completing missions and maintaining their ship. Key resources such as morale and oxygen must be carefully managed throughout the game.
Each challenge deck offers a unique sci-fi story, with the base set featuring a "2001: A Space Odyssey"-inspired AI deck. During their turn, players draw movement cards that allow them to position their crew across different locations on the ship. Being in the right place enables the activation of ship systems or crew-specific abilities, such as generating oxygen, boosting morale, or repairing damage. Crew members' locations also determine their ability to complete missions like searching the ship or realigning solar panels.
The overarching threat is represented by the challenge deck, which generates missions reflecting the crew’s responses to evolving dangers. Players vote on whether to engage in these missions, weighing the potential rewards against the risks of failure and its consequences. If a mission is declined, it is aborted but may resurface later. In the base set, the narrative centers on the ship’s AI, which has eliminated the original crew and now seeks to thwart the players' rescue mission through suffocation or ejecting crew into space.
Cooperation and communication are crucial as players coordinate movement and mission actions to efficiently use the limited ship space. However, limited shared oxygen and the fact that each player wins or loses individually introduce a layer of tension where betrayal can arise, creating a semi-cooperative dynamic. The game is won by exhausting the challenge deck and lost when all crew are lost. While betrayal is not required, it remains a constant threat due to shared resources, though the game can also be played fully cooperatively depending on player preference.
