Description

Storm Over Asia is both a companion game to GMT’s A World at War and Gathering Storm, and a standalone title with its own victory conditions. Starting in 1935, the game captures the tense preparations for war among Japan, China, Britain, and Russia, as none can be certain of what lies ahead. Japan must carefully manage its expansion in China, the looming confrontation with the United States and Russia, and the broader impact of the Pacific theater in a global conflict. Meanwhile, China, Britain, and Russia strive to resist immediate Japanese advances while also setting the stage for effective long-term war efforts in the Pacific. The game explores a variety of fascinating “what if” scenarios: What if Japan had focused on naval expansion despite antagonizing the United States? What if Japanese admirals emphasized submarine warfare or had taken the American submarine threat more seriously? What if Japan had invested in jets, advanced submarines, rockets, or synthetic oil technology? How would history have changed had Japan prepared a strategic bomber for use against China or Russia, or launched a direct attack on the Soviet Union before tackling China? Additionally, Storm Over Asia imagines alternate developments in China’s internal struggles and Allied preparations, such as an earlier United Front or better-equipped forces in Australia and India. Ultimately, the question remains: how would you have commanded these forces? Storm Over Asia can be played as a complete game in a single session, with its unique victory conditions. It also integrates smoothly with Gathering Storm, GMT’s pre-war game set in Europe, sharing a similar structure consistent with A World at War. Players familiar with Gathering Storm will find the transition straightforward, though differences such as combat mechanics in China and the challenge of coordinating Axis strategies add depth before full-scale war breaks out. The game features:

  • Four random events each turn, delivering extensive replayability.
  • Four Japanese Random Event Category Cards guiding Japan’s turn-by-turn developments.
  • An economic system based on tiles and activity counters that eliminates bookkeeping.
  • Flexible Japanese mobilization rules allowing a balance between civilian and military production.
  • Unit construction that lets Japan activate reserves immediately, trading off future options, while China, Britain, and Russia can build and maintain military counters if resources allow.
  • Variable research focuses for Japan, China, and Britain, covering air, naval, military, economic, or intelligence projects with short- or long-term effects.
  • A fast-paced diplomatic system with public targets but hidden point allocations each turn.
  • Japanese shipbuilding options featuring a diverse fleet, including powerful 4-factor super carriers.
  • Ahistorical counters enhancing gameplay, such as improved Japanese armor, stronger Chinese infantry, Chinese and Indian air units, plus Australian battlecruisers, light carriers, and naval air units.
  • A dynamic combat system covering both the Japanese invasion of China and clashes between Japan and Russia in Manchuria and Siberia.
  • No dice are used, emphasizing strategic planning and decision-making over luck.
Storm Over Asia offers a rich strategic experience that lets players dive into alternative history and complex wartime diplomacy and combat in the Asia-Pacific theater before World War II fully erupts.
