The Barracks Emperors (engl.)

Beschreibung

The Barracks Emperors is a strategic card game set during the Roman Crisis of the Third Century, a turbulent period when at least 45 contenders vied for control of the Roman Empire. Players take on the roles of influential political factions, competing to sway the men who aspired to become Emperors of Rome. By playing cards that represent their influence, they attempt to claim imperial reigns depicted by historical Emperor cards on the board. Success requires careful planning and sometimes aiding rivals to advance one’s own position in the complex game of politics. At its core, The Barracks Emperors is a trick-taking game with a unique twist: all 13 tricks are played simultaneously in an interlocking grid. This innovative design forces players to weigh the value of each card not only for their own gain but also for how it might benefit opponents in other tricks. Additionally, every card provides a special ability that can be used strategically to surprise and challenge other players. The game features individual cards representing historical emperors, co-emperors, pretenders, and Gallic Emperors who broke away from Rome during the Crisis. Each card includes interesting historical facts about the rise and fall of the figure it portrays. Fans of Time of Crisis and The Age of Iron and Rust will recognize familiar concepts and flavor from those deck-building wargames adapted into this standalone experience. Influence Cards such as Praetorian Guard, Foederati, and Pretender return in new roles that enrich gameplay without requiring ownership of those earlier titles. An innovative card drafting mechanic adds depth to the strategy by allowing players to influence their hands each round, reducing the luck element often tied to random card draws. While designed primarily for four players, The Barracks Emperors also includes options for two or three players as well as a straightforward solo mode for individual play.
