Under the Southern Cross: South American Naval Battles in the Age of Sail, 1811-1841 is the fourth installment in the acclaimed Flying Colors series, focusing on naval warfare in the southern part of South America. Covering conflicts from the Wars of Independence beginning in 1810 to the last purely sailing naval battle between Argentina and Uruguay in 1841, the game highlights the struggles around Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. This volume introduces updated rules that reflect the unique challenges of river and tidal currents, new grounding mechanics for operations in the Rio de la Plata and Uruguay rivers, and the strategic use of ship’s boats to tow stranded or becalmed vessels. Players can choose from more than two dozen scenarios, ranging from small skirmishes involving a few ships to large fleet actions. Additionally, the popular ship duel map and activation cards from Serpents of the Seas (Flying Colors Volume II) return, along with 18 new ship duel scenarios. Under the Southern Cross stands as a complete game on its own but remains fully compatible with other Flying Colors volumes. Whether you aim to uphold the Spanish Empire or support the Patriot forces in their fight against European imperialism, this game offers a detailed and immersive naval experience from a pivotal era in South American history.
