1793: Patriots & Traitors, The French Revolution Year II (engl.)

Description

1793: Patriots & Traitors, The French Revolution Year II (engl.) is a strategy game for 1 to 5 players aged 14+ with a playing time of 30-120 minutes. Players take on political factions during the French Revolution, balancing cooperation and conflict to prevent foreign armies from crushing the Revolution. Featuring multi-functional cards, historical figures, and lawmaking mechanics, it offers deep strategic decisions and high replayability.

For over three years, the banner of Revolution has flown over France. The old order has collapsed, yet the people still demand change. Bread is scarce, and the armies of Austria and Prussia loom ready to invade. The press wields power, publicly accusing traitors and rallying citizens to action. While some believe the Revolution has gone far enough, others see it as only just beginning. France teems with intrigue and unrest in these dangerous times. Now that the monarchy under Louis XVI has fallen, who will seize control as the nation fractures?

1793: Patriots & Traitors vividly recreates the turmoil that gripped France from 1792 to 1794 like never before.

Each player aligns with a political faction, pursuing distinct objectives. Despite fierce political rivalries, they must cooperate to prevent the invading armies from Austria, Prussia, and Sardinia-Piedmont from reaching Paris—a defeat that would abruptly end the Revolution and the game for all.

This compact card-driven game uses multi-functional cards to offer a wide range of strategic choices, each with meaningful consequences. Players influence key locations in Paris—such as the National Convention, Palais-Égalité, and the Paris streets—as well as the provinces. Controlling these areas grants various benefits and can enable a Coup d’État or Civil War should the situation deteriorate.

Revolutionary leaders like Robespierre, Danton, Marat, and Brissot play crucial roles. They can aid their factions’ goals provided they are not arrested or assassinated first.

A core mechanic allows players to enact laws for the new Republic, altering game rules and even changing the board—after all, this is a Revolution.

Expect a tense, asymmetrical game rich in replayability, immersing players in the heated debates of the National Convention, the unrest of Parisian streets, the crowds around the guillotine, and the battlefields like Fleurus.

Designed by Jason St. Just and featuring artwork by Marc von Martial, one of the industry’s finest graphic artists, the game presents detailed era-style maps and finely crafted wooden meeples that bring the period to life.
