Age of Rail: South Africa is the fourth title in Capstone Games’ "Iron Rail" series and a modern reimagining of 2011’s South African Railroads, which itself evolved from the game Veld Railroads. In this economic strategy game, players compete to amass the greatest wealth by acquiring shares and collecting dividends from railway companies. The game begins with an auction where players bid on initial shares of various companies. During each turn, players choose from four actions: building track, developing settlements, offering stock, or paying dividends. These actions have limits—for instance, only one dividend action is available, and once used, it remains unavailable until that player’s next turn, who then must select a different action. There are two “offer stock” actions and three “develop settlement” actions available in total, while the “build track” action can be taken repeatedly without limit. When players buy shares, their funds go into the railroad company’s treasury, which finances track construction. Developing settlements raises the value of stations, increasing the income generated when railroads connect to them. When a dividend is paid, the company’s income is divided by five (the number of shares) and distributed accordingly. If any shares remain unsold, the company itself retains the corresponding dividend portion. The game concludes after the sixth dividend payment. This final payout includes bonuses based on the number of company connections and is distributed solely according to the shares issued, rather than all existing shares.
