Set in mid-19th century Barcelona, the game centers around the city’s rapid expansion following the demolition of its old city walls. Players assume the role of builders tasked with developing the "Eixample," the urgently needed new district designed by urban planner Ildefons Cerdà starting in 1860.

Throughout the game, you will construct residential buildings to accommodate citizens moving out of the old city, lay down streets and tram lines, and establish public services. Additionally, you may choose to engage with Modernisme, an emerging architectural and artistic style favored by the wealthy elite.

Barcelona is played over a variable number of rounds, interrupted by three scoring phases and ending with a final scoring. Each turn involves performing multiple actions, including a building phase where new structures are added to the main board, followed by preparation for the next turn. Points can be scored in several ways during the game, as well as from unlocked spaces on individual player boards and Modernisme project tiles acquired along the way. The player with the highest score at the end wins the game.
