Allenby's Gamble (#117-1) recreates the beginning of the Southern Palestinian Offensive of November 1917. After two unsuccessful attempts to capture Gaza, the Egyptian Expeditionary Force appointed a new commander who introduced a fresh strategy. General Allenby's goal was to decisively defeat the Ottoman army in Southern Palestine, forcing the diversion of Ottoman reinforcements to the region. The offensive commenced with a coordinated attack on Beersheba, located at the eastern end of the Gaza-Beersheba line. The following day marked the start of the Battle of Tel el Khuweilfe, as forces advanced into the Judean foothills. This movement not only threatened the towns of Hebron and Bethlehem but also compelled Ottoman commanders to commit their reserves to counter the British threat. The Third Battle of Gaza then unfolded along the Mediterranean coast, featuring the largest artillery barrage of World War I outside the European theatre. Simultaneously, the Battles of Hareira and Sheria aimed to engage and tie down as many enemy troops as possible in the central sector. Allenby’s Gamble simulates the first ten days of this critical campaign, offering historical depth and strategic challenges. The game uses rules developed from the 2010 release Tannenberg 1914, now forming part of the Collision of Empires Standard Rule System, featuring chit-pull mechanics to dictate activation and play order.
