France 40 2nd. Edition (engl.) is an expert game for 2 players aged 12+ with a playing time of 240 minutes. This 2nd edition features two linked scenarios covering the 1940 German campaign in France, focusing on armored warfare, air support, and morale. Updated rules and new units enhance historical accuracy and balance, offering deep strategic gameplay on separate but connectable maps.

Both share the same core rules and many game pieces, but each features its own full-sized map. Sickle Cut: Guderian's Drive to the Channel This scenario covers the critical week in May 1940 when German forces broke through the French line at the Meuse and surged toward the sea at Abbeville. The game begins on May 13th, the third day of Case Yellow. Six panzer divisions have emerged from the Ardennes, positioned at the Meuse River, while French and British troops rush through Belgium to hold the Dyle Line and protect the Gembloux Gap. Players must see if the Germans can cross the Meuse against strong resistance, then break out from the bridgeheads and push forward despite Allied reinforcements arriving from the north and south. Dynamo: Retreat to Victory This game depicts the British evacuation at Dunkirk, beginning on May 24th—the day British commanders realize the B.E.F. risks being cut off from its supply base and decide to withdraw to the coast. Many German panzer divisions are closer to Dunkirk than the British forces. The challenge is to reach the coast before the Germans and hold the Dunkirk perimeter for eight days to enable evacuation. Both games emphasize armor, air support, and morale. Special rules feature Allied Heavy Tanks, De Gaulle, Rommel, Hitler’s Halt Order, and French Command Paralysis. While the two maps can be placed side by side for a continuous overview from May 13th to June 3rd, there is no combined scenario. 2ND EDITION This edition represents a significant enhancement over the original. Rules covering Extended Movement, Combat, Advance After Combat, Breakthrough Combat, and Determined Defense have been revised to align more closely with recent titles in the 19XX series, such as Stalingrad ’42 and Salerno ’43. A new scenario by Mark Merritt combines both maps for extended gameplay. Additional units have been added or updated to better reflect historical order of battle in both Sickle Cut and Dynamo. Minor cities, roads, and a fortified hex have also been added to the Dynamo map. Most importantly, extensive playtesting has improved balance and gameplay quality in both scenarios compared to the first edition.
