Beschreibung

Next War Iran (engl.) is an expert game for 1 to 2 players aged 14+ with a playing time of 60 to 480 minutes. Set in the Middle East, players command Iranian or Allied forces in a strategic conflict over control of the Straits of Hormuz, featuring ground, air, and naval units, weather effects, and complex combat resolution reflecting modern warfare.

The Middle East has long been a strategic and contested region, serving as a crossroads for ancient trade routes and a focal point due to its vast oil reserves. With Iran’s old regime weakening, the country challenges Western influence by attempting to assert full sovereignty, notably by mining the Straits of Hormuz and closing them to all traffic. In response, the United States and its allies mobilize to reopen this critical passage and restore the flow of oil to the world. Next War: Iran, the sixth installment in the Next War series, offers a unique dynamic where the Allied player takes an offensive stance while the non-Allied player defends against neo-imperial intervention. The operation to reopen the Straits presents a complex challenge, complicated by logistical hurdles, scarce regional allies, and Iran’s formidable anti-access/area denial (A2AD) capabilities. The game’s units represent divisions and brigades from the Iranian and U.S. forces. Iran fields all branches of its military—Ground Forces, Navy, and the Revolutionary Guard—with possible limited Russian support. The Allied coalition primarily features the United States, with potential involvement from the UK, Australia, France, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. Air units cover fighters, bombers, and attack squadrons, rated according to factors such as all-weather ability, range, pilot skill, and role capabilities including air-to-air combat and close air support. Naval units abstract task forces enabling amphibious assaults, naval engagements, and gunfire support. The map covers Iran’s coastal region at roughly 7.5 miles per hex, spanning from the port of Chah Bahar in the east to about a hundred miles west of the Straits of Hormuz. Key island areas feature important petroleum facilities that the Allies aim to capture intact. Gameplay includes weather effects that impact air, naval, and ground operations. The sequence features initiative, air and naval phases determining control of air superiority and sea control, as well as advanced special operations allowing reconnaissance and raids behind enemy lines. The advanced game also incorporates strike phases for air strikes, cruise missiles, artillery, and surface-to-surface missiles. Movement and combat phases offer opportunities for maneuver, reaction, and fighting with an advantage granted to the player holding the initiative. Reinforcements and replacements play a critical role, as does a nuanced victory determination system. Combat resolution takes into account unit strengths, efficiency (reflecting training, doctrine, and morale), and terrain. The combat results table emphasizes attrition and cohesion loss over mere casualties, reflecting the brutal and rapid nature of modern warfare. Several scenarios are included, ranging from focused limited objectives to a full campaign encompassing the entire map. Advanced scenarios offer various buildup stages prior to the start of hostilities, letting players experience different strategic situations. The question remains: Can the Allied player enforce Western will and secure the vital flow of oil, or will the Iranian player successfully defy global pressure and maintain control?
