Memoir 44 - Disaster at Dieppe (Exp.) (engl.)

Description

Operation Jubilee was a raid on the German-occupied coastal town of Dieppe, aiming to demonstrate the Allies' ability to seize and hold a major port, if only briefly. The Canadian forces, however, could not have anticipated how short their foothold would be. The landing beach stretched for a mile, flanked by headlands and lined with barbed wire. Initially, light enemy fire allowed the Essex Scottish Regiment on Red Beach and the Hamilton Light Infantry on White Beach to breach the first line of wire and approach the sea wall with minimal losses. But the 14th Canadian Tank Battalion's tanks failed to arrive ahead of the infantry as planned, and once landed, they struggled to gain traction on the loose pebbles. Compounding the difficulties, the Royal Regiment landing on Blue Beach near Puys was delayed and pinned down, unable to move west to capture the eastern headlands before the main assault. Fully alert, the German forces then targeted the exposed Canadians. Control of the Casino and surrounding pillboxes shifted back and forth, but after four hours the Allied commanders were forced to retreat, suffering nearly 60% casualties—killed, wounded, or captured. Despite the heavy losses, the campaign's hard lessons played a crucial role in preparing for the Normandy landings two years later. This expansion is not a stand-alone game and requires either one copy of Memoir '44 plus the Operation Overlord expansion, or two full copies of Memoir '44. The four standard scenarios also require the Terrain Pack and/or the Mediterranean Theater expansion. For players wishing to use all correctly colored figures in the Overlord scenarios, two copies of Mediterranean Theater are necessary.
