By the end of August 1942, German forces had reached the Volga River north of Stalingrad. Within days, the 4th Panzer Army advanced toward the river south of the city, effectively encircling many soldiers of the Soviet 62nd Army. Stalin’s order of July 27 — “Not a step back!” — had become more than a command; it was a desperate necessity. Its slogan, “There is no land behind the Volga!”, reflected the harsh reality confronting all the city’s defenders and civilians. Having firsthand experience of the devastating impact of German Blitzkrieg tactics on the Russian steppe, Lt. General Chuikov adapted to the situation by turning the city’s carpet bombing to his advantage. He anchored defensive lines in bombed-out buildings overlooking key streets and squares, ordering Soviet troops to “hug the enemy.” By keeping frontline positions extremely close to German forces—often only a floor or door frame apart—he mitigated the effectiveness of the Germans’ firepower and combined arms superiority. This expansion is not a standalone game and requires either one copy of Memoir ’44 plus the Operation Overlord expansion, or two full copies of Memoir ’44 to play.
