Description

For two centuries, the borderlands between England and Scotland were marked by persistent conflict. By 1482, Berwick-upon-Tweed—once Scotland’s wealthiest port—had changed hands thirteen times. When Henry VIII became king in 1509, the fifty-mile stretch of rolling hills and breathtaking landscapes along the border had endured decades of hardship and violence.

Despite these challenges, the resilient families of the frontier survived by relying primarily on their livestock, as crops were often unreliable. When provisions ran low, raids became a common strategy to seize cattle and sheep from neighboring clans. These raids were typically well-coordinated attacks involving several families working together under cover of night, aiming to capture large herds and drive them to safety before enemy pursuers arrived in what was known as the “hot trod.”

To manage this unrest, England and Scotland established March Law, dividing the border into six territories: the East, Middle, and West Marches on each side, each governed by a powerful Warden from notable families capable of mustering large forces. However, these same families were often the most active raiders themselves, undermining the peace the law sought to uphold.

In Border Reivers, players take the role of one of six prominent border clans—Grey, Fenwick, Dacre, Maxwell, Kerr, or Hume—leading their March to prominence. The objective is to grow your clan’s wealth and fame across the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, gaining victory points through successful combat, amassing vast herds of livestock, and increasing your Notoriety relative to rival families on the map.
