Dominant Species Marine 2nd Print (engl.)

Description

Sixty-something million years ago, a great ice age ended, triggering massive warming that reshaped the globe and sparked a titanic struggle for supremacy among various animal species.

Dominant Species: Marine abstractly recreates this pivotal moment in ancient history—capturing the challenges faced by creatures adapting to a gradually changing Earth after the ice age.

Each player takes on the role of one of four major aquatic animal classes—dinosaur, fish, cephalopod, or crustacean—starting in a natural balance with one another. But survival of the fittest quickly upsets this balance.

Through strategic action pawn placement, you will expand into diverse habitats to claim powerful card effects, propagate your species, and earn victory points. Actions such as speciation, migration, and adaptation help you strengthen your position and outmaneuver opponents.

The game board grows dynamically, composed of large hexagonal tiles representing the ancient ocean and smaller Hydrothermal Vent tiles, which transform certain areas into vent habitats.

Action pawns trigger immediate effects when placed, enabling a variety of moves including environmental changes, evolution, and migration. Special pawns, which can be acquired during play, offer enhanced placement options and strategic advantages over basic pawns.

Players aim to boost their animal’s survivability while impeding rivals, supported by cards granting one-time abilities, ongoing benefits, or recurring victory point opportunities. The game culminates in a final scoring round where the player with the most victory points is crowned the dominant species—before a massive asteroid arrives.

For those familiar with the original Dominant Species, this edition introduces several key updates: actions now occur immediately when pawns are placed, increasing strategic flexibility and easing cognitive load. Domination is assessed globally per element type rather than on individual tiles and no longer competes directly with opponents. Players start by selecting one unique Trait card from three, granting their animal a special ability.

Controlling element dominance allows players to acquire and maintain special pawns that can displace opponents’ basic pawns, be placed anywhere on the action display, access exclusive action spaces, and provide additional victory points at game's end. These refinements deepen strategy and streamline gameplay.
