Empire of the Sun 5th printing (engl.)

Beschreibung

Empire of the Sun 5th printing (engl.) is an expert game for 1 to 2 players aged 12+ with a playing time of 360 minutes. This strategic card-driven wargame covers the entire War in the Pacific, combining classic hexagon mechanics with intense air, naval, and ground combat. Players command historic leaders and forces, making critical strategic decisions to influence the outcome of the conflict.

Empire of the Sun (EotS) is Mark Herman's third card-driven design, offering a strategic-level overview of the entire War in the Pacific from the attack on Pearl Harbor to Japan’s surrender. As the first card-driven game to incorporate elements of a classic hexagon wargame, it combines the tension and uncertainty typical of the CDG system with a more traditional wargaming approach. Players assume the roles of MacArthur, Yamamoto, Nimitz, and Mountbatten, commanding forces across a single map representing the entire theater—from India to Hawaii, Alaska to Australia—using a 1942 equal-area projection. The game challenges players to make critical strategic decisions, particularly focusing on major offensive operations. The Japanese strive to replicate their historical early expansion while Allied players race to counterattack, aiming to inflict heavy losses on experienced Japanese units that are difficult to replace. Combat unfolds in two phases: first, air and naval forces engage, followed by ground combat. The outcome of these combined battles determines control of contested areas. A key strategic element is U.S. political will: Japan wins by forcing the U.S. into a negotiated peace, achieved by knocking out countries like India, China, and Australia and inflicting severe American casualties. The historical arrival of the atomic bomb is not guaranteed, often leading to a protracted conflict that may culminate in an invasion of Japan. Empire of the Sun includes scenarios designed for different years (1942, 1943, and 1944), each lasting three turns and playable in under two hours—ideal for enthusiasts, grognards, and competitive players. Fans of card-driven games will find EotS a fresh evolution of the genre, while those who appreciate classic hexagon wargames will recognize familiar core mechanics enhanced with new levels of excitement and replayability. Despite its depth, the game remains accessible and straightforward to learn.
