Here I Stand: Wars of the Reformation 1517-1555 is a groundbreaking card-driven game that explores the complex political and religious struggles of early 16th century Europe. Set during a pivotal 40-year period marked by the actions of historical figures such as Martin Luther, Jean Calvin, Ignatius Loyola, Henry VIII, Charles V, Francis I, Suleiman the Magnificent, Ferdinand Magellan, Hernando Cortes, and Nicolaus Copernicus, the game captures the era’s conflicts on a point-to-point map that intertwines diplomacy, warfare, and religious upheaval. Players take on the roles of six major powers, each pursuing a unique path to victory through strategic alliances, military campaigns, and religious influence. The 500th Anniversary Edition, released in 2017 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses, offers several enhancements that enrich gameplay. This edition adds six new cards—including Thomas More, Thomas Cromwell, Rough Wooing, and Imperial Coronation—and revises over 15 existing cards like Copernicus, Master of Italy, and Machiavelli, increasing strategic depth and diplomatic options. A new Chateau construction table has been introduced to resolve France’s Patron of the Arts home card plays. Additionally, updates derived from the Virgin Queen expansion refine rules related to minor power activation, piracy, spice trading, and foreign wars, providing a more nuanced and dynamic experience.
